Frequently Asked Questions about Anamu Extract
What is Anamu (Petiveria alliacea)?
Anamu is a tropical perennial herb native to South and Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa, botanically Petiveria alliacea. The part used here is the herb - the aerial parts of the plant. It goes by many regional names: guinea hen weed in the Caribbean, mucura and tipi in the Amazon, apacin in Spanish-speaking areas, and garlic weed in English, because the plant has a strong garlic-like smell that comes from natural sulfur compounds - even though it is not related to garlic. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. Please read the important safety note below before use, especially regarding pregnancy.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Petiveria alliacea herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below before use.
Why does anamu have so many names, and is it garlic?
Anamu is one plant with many names, which can be confusing. Anamu, guinea hen weed, mucura, tipi, apacin, and garlic weed are all regional names for the same species, Petiveria alliacea - the name simply depends on where you are. As for garlic: anamu is called garlic weed and smells strongly of garlic because it naturally contains sulfur compounds similar to those in garlic, but it is a completely different plant and is not related to garlic (which is an Allium). So the garlicky aroma is a feature of the plant, not a sign that it contains any actual garlic. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Petiveria alliacea) and plant part (herb) so you know exactly which plant you are getting.
How do I use Anamu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Please read the important safety note below before use, especially regarding pregnancy. Drink the entire contents.
Is Anamu right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because anamu has important safety considerations. Do not use anamu if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant. Anamu has traditionally been used to bring on menstruation and can act on the uterus, so it should be strictly avoided during pregnancy. Do not use it while nursing. Anamu may also lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take any blood-sugar medication, use caution and monitor your levels, and speak with your doctor first. It may have a blood-thinning effect as well, so use caution if you take an anticoagulant and stop using it before any surgery. Do not use it for prolonged periods or in high doses. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Anamu (Petiveria Alliacea) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
