Ashwagandha Tincture - Alcohol-Based Withania somnifera Root Extract

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of dried ashwagandha root - Withania somnifera, the winter cherry of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), a cultivated root crop of India.

  • Botanical name: Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Solanaceae)
  • Plant part: Dried root
  • Also known as: Ashwagandha, Winter Cherry, Indian Ginseng (a nickname only - it is not a Panax ginseng)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture - classic herbal liquid extract
  • Other ingredients: Organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Cultivated root, responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
  • Sizes: 2 oz, 4 oz, 32 oz, 64 oz, 256 oz and multi-packs

Why choose the alcohol tincture

  • The classic method. The dried root is macerated in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Alcohol is the traditional solvent for root extracts and has been used by herbalists for centuries.
  • Longest shelf life. An alcohol tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place; no refrigeration is needed after opening.
  • Concentrated and easy to dilute. The taste is sharper and more herbal than the glycerite; a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice.

How to use the tincture

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. If you prefer less alcohol taste, put the drops into a cup of hot water and let it stand for a few minutes - much of the alcohol evaporates, although not all of it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

How much alcohol is in a serving?

The alcohol percentage of the extract is printed on the label. One serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol in a single serving is small; it is the total volume that matters if you take several servings a day. If you need to avoid alcohol completely, the alcohol-free drops are the right choice; if you only want to reduce the alcohol taste, the hot-water method above works well.

Tincture or drops?

If you prefer the traditional alcohol-based extract with a long room-temperature shelf life, this tincture is the one. If you avoid alcohol or want a milder, sweeter taste, see our Ashwagandha Drops - alcohol-free liquid ashwagandha in vegetable glycerin. Both are made from the same dried root.

Tincture, capsules, or a standardized extract?

A tincture and a capsule are different forms of the same root, not different levels of quality: a liquid lets you adjust the number of drops and is absorbed as a drink, while a capsule is a fixed dose of powder. This tincture is a whole-root extract; it is not a standardized product such as KSM-66 or Sensoril, and its withanolide content is not standardized. Despite the nickname "Indian ginseng", ashwagandha is not related to Panax ginseng.

Important safety information - please read before use

Ashwagandha has several important cautions. Please read before use.

  • Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha products, usually within the first weeks to months of use. Stop and seek medical advice if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual tiredness, or abdominal pain. Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Thyroid and hormones: ashwagandha can change thyroid hormone levels. Do not use if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication unless your doctor agrees.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy - the root has a traditional history of use to end pregnancy. Avoid while breastfeeding.
  • Medication: it may add to the effect of sedatives and sleep medicines, blood-sugar-lowering and blood-pressure medicines, and immunosuppressants. Consult your practitioner if you take any of these. Stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
  • Autoimmune conditions: avoid unless supervised by your doctor.
  • Tolerance: larger amounts may cause stomach upset, loose stools, or drowsiness. Keep to the label serving and take breaks rather than using it continuously. It is a nightshade (Solanaceae) plant - avoid if you are sensitive to nightshades.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ashwagandha Extract
What is Ashwagandha Tincture (alcohol-based Withania somnifera root extract)?
Ashwagandha Tincture is an alcohol-based liquid extract of dried ashwagandha root, Withania somnifera, a nightshade-family plant (Solanaceae) cultivated in India and also called winter cherry. The dried root is macerated in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method, which gives a tincture its long shelf life at room temperature. It is the same dried root we use for our alcohol-free drops; only the extraction liquid differs. It is a whole-root extract, not a standardized powder such as KSM-66, and it is not a ginseng despite the nickname "Indian ginseng". Made in the USA, gluten free, in sizes from 2 oz to 256 oz. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below, as ashwagandha has several important cautions.
Why choose the alcohol tincture instead of the alcohol-free drops?
Choose the tincture if you prefer the traditional alcohol-based herbal extract: alcohol has been the standard solvent for root extracts for centuries, and a tincture keeps for years in a cool, dark place without refrigeration. The taste is sharper and more herbal, but a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. If you avoid alcohol, or want a milder and naturally sweet taste, our Ashwagandha Drops are the same root extracted in vegetable glycerin instead. The root inside is identical, so the choice is about alcohol, taste, and storage, not about strength or quality.
Is ashwagandha better as a tincture or a capsule, and is this KSM-66?
A tincture and a capsule are different forms of the same root, not different levels of quality. A liquid lets you adjust the number of drops and is taken as a drink; a capsule is a fixed dose of dried powder. Which is better is a matter of preference and convenience. This tincture is a whole-root extract: it is not a standardized product such as KSM-66 or Sensoril, and its withanolide content is not standardized. Despite the nickname "Indian ginseng", ashwagandha is not related to Panax ginseng - the name reflects its traditional reputation, not its botany. If you want a standardized extract, look for a product that states its withanolide percentage.
How do I use Ashwagandha Tincture, and can I reduce the alcohol?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. If you prefer less alcohol taste, put the drops into a cup of hot water and let it stand for a few minutes: much of the alcohol evaporates, although not all of it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight, and keep out of reach of children.
