Frequently Asked Questions about Basil Extract
What is Basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaf extract?
Basil is a familiar culinary herb of the mint family (Lamiaceae), botanically Ocimum basilicum and often called sweet basil or common basil. It is the same aromatic leaf used in cooking, from Genovese pesto to countless dishes. The part used here is the dried leaf. Basil is naturally rich in an aromatic volatile oil, with constituents such as linalool, methylchavicol (estragole) and eugenol - these are simply what gives the leaf its scent and are components of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not the essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Note that this is sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum, and not holy basil or tulsi, which is a different species.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ocimum basilicum leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as holy basil or tulsi?
No. This is common sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum, the culinary herb. Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is a different species, Ocimum tenuiflorum (you may also see the older name Ocimum sanctum), and it is used quite differently in traditional practice. We sell holy basil separately under its own name, so if that is what you are looking for, look for the tulsi or holy basil product rather than this one. There is also a difference of form worth noting: this is a liquid extract of the dried basil leaf that you take by the drop, not fresh basil from the produce aisle and not a culinary spice. We label the botanical name (Ocimum basilicum) and plant part (leaf) on every page so there is no mix-up between sweet basil and holy basil, or between the extract and the fresh herb.
How do I use Basil liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Basil extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Basil is a common culinary food and is safe to eat in the amounts used in cooking. A concentrated liquid extract, however, is not the same as a sprinkle of basil in a recipe. Basil's natural volatile oil contains a constituent called estragole, so as a sensible precaution a concentrated extract is best avoided during pregnancy and while nursing, and should not be taken in excess of the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Basil (Ocimum Basilicum) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
