Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a perennial herb of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), native to the woodlands of eastern North America. It sends up tall, wiry spikes of small white flowers above deeply toothed compound leaves. The part used is the dried root and rhizome. This tincture is prepared from that dried root using a traditional alcohol extraction.
-
WHOLE-ROOT LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried root and rhizome of Actaea racemosa, carrying the root's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated or standardized compound.
-
TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, with vegetable glycerine and water, offering a long shelf life. An alcohol-free glycerite version is available separately.
-
TWO NAMES, ONE PLANT: The currently accepted botanical name is Actaea racemosa. The older name Cimicifuga racemosa is still widely used on labels and in botanical literature - it refers to the same plant.
-
NOT BLUE COHOSH: Blue cohosh is Caulophyllum thalictroides, a different plant in a different family (Berberidaceae). The two share only the word cohosh. We sell blue cohosh separately, on its own pages.
-
NOT WHITE COHOSH: White cohosh, or doll's eyes, is Actaea pachypoda - the same genus but a different species, grown ornamentally for its white berries. Ours is the root of Actaea racemosa.
-
OTHER NAMES YOU MAY SEE: Black snakeroot, bugbane and rattleroot all refer to this same plant.
Actaea racemosa - Black Cohosh Root
Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, synonym Cimicifuga racemosa) grows in rich woodland from Ontario and Manitoba south to Georgia and Alabama. The name cohosh is thought to come from an Algonquian word describing the rough texture of the rhizome; black refers to the dark colour of the root system. The name bugbane reflects an old belief that the flowers repel insects, and rattleroot comes from the dry seed pods, which rattle on the mature stems. The root has a long documented history of use among eastern North American Indigenous peoples, including the Cherokee and Algonquin, and was later adopted by nineteenth-century Eclectic physicians.
