This is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Brassica nigra, the plant properly called BLACK mustard, of the Brassicaceae (cabbage) family; in traditional Chinese medicine the seed is known as Hei Jie Zi. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. A note on names: although this listing has been sold as "brown mustard," botanically brown (or Indian) mustard is a different species, Brassica juncea; our seed is Brassica nigra, black mustard, which is why all of its other names - black mustard, Hei Jie Zi, Khardal Aswad, moutarde noire - refer to the black type. Mustard seed naturally contains pungent sulfur compounds (glucosinolates such as sinigrin, which form allyl isothiocyanate), so please read the safety notes below.

What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?

Both are liquid extracts of the same black mustard seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical.

Is black mustard the same as brown mustard or yellow mustard?

No - these are three different mustard plants that are easy to confuse. Our product is BLACK mustard, Brassica nigra (Hei Jie Zi). Brown mustard - also called Indian mustard - is a different species, Brassica juncea; even though this listing has carried the name "brown mustard," the seed itself is the black type. Yellow or white mustard is Sinapis alba (known in Chinese medicine as Bai Jie Zi), which we sell separately. All three are in the cabbage family and all contain pungent mustard-oil compounds, but they are distinct plants with slightly different flavor and chemistry. We label ours as black mustard (Brassica nigra) so its identity is clear.

How do I use Black Mustard seed liquid extract?

Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving - mustard is naturally pungent. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the sharp taste. Do not apply the concentrated extract directly to skin, as mustard can be irritating. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.

Mustard seed is a common culinary spice and is generally safe in food amounts, but a concentrated extract deserves a few sensible cautions. Pungent isothiocyanates: black mustard naturally forms allyl isothiocyanate, a sharp compound that can irritate the mouth, stomach and mucous membranes in large amounts - do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not apply the concentrated extract to the skin, where mustard can cause irritation or even a burn. Thyroid: like other cabbage-family plants, mustard contains goitrogenic compounds, so use caution if you have a thyroid condition or low iodine intake.
