Blood Pressure Mixture Tincture
Blood Pressure Mixture Tincture, Hawthorn Berry, Motherwort Herb, Marshmallow Root, Flax SeedBlood Pressure Mixture Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts: the red berry of the hedgerow hawthorn, a bitter mint-family herb, the root of the marshmallow plant and the small brown flax seed. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product and not a replacement for any prescribed medication - please read the safety information below before use.
- Hawthorn, berry - Crataegus laevigata berry (Rosaceae)
- Motherwort, herb - Leonurus cardiaca herb (Lamiaceae)
- Marshmallow, root - Althaea officinalis root (Malvaceae)
- Flax, seed - Linum usitatissimum seed (Linaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Hawthorn berry - the small red autumn fruit of a thorny tree of European hedgerows. This blend uses the berry; our Blood Pressure Support blend uses the spring leaf and flower of the same tree, a separate preparation.
- Motherwort - a tall, bitter mint-family herb with whorls of small pink flowers, named for its long history in the care of mothers; the flowering herb is used.
- Marshmallow root - the thick, pale root of a tall plant with soft velvety leaves and pink flowers that grows on damp ground across Europe and western Asia; the root is rich in mucilage. The root is used here; the leaf is a separate extract.
- Flax seed - the small brown seed of the flax plant, the same seed used as a food, rich in mucilage, oil and lignans.
Why a tincture
The four dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, slightly fruity taste from hawthorn and motherwort, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Because marshmallow and flax are rich in mucilage, take this blend at least two hours apart from any medication. Motherwort can cause mild drowsiness, so do not drive until you know how it affects you. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same four-herb blend is available as Blood Pressure Mixture Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs. Our Blood Pressure Support Tincture uses the same four plants but with hawthorn leaf and flower and marshmallow leaf instead of the berry and the root.
Important safety information - please read before use
Two of the herbs in this blend interact with heart and blood-pressure medicines. Please read before use.
- Not a substitute for medication: this is an herbal product. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, a heart condition or any cardiovascular problem, use it only with your doctor, and never stop or change prescribed medication on your own.
- Heart and blood-pressure medication: hawthorn and motherwort can interact with digoxin, beta-blockers, nitrates, calcium-channel blockers, antihypertensives and antiarrhythmics. Do not use this blend with any of them without your doctor.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use - motherwort stimulates the uterus, and hawthorn is traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
- Blood thinners: motherwort may slow blood clotting - consult your doctor if you take warfarin or similar.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: flax seed contains lignans with mild estrogen-like activity - consult your practitioner if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
- Serving: do not exceed the label serving - concentrated flax seed contains small amounts of cyanogenic compounds.
- Medication timing: marshmallow and flax mucilage can slow the absorption of medicines - take this blend at least two hours apart from any medication.
- Drowsiness: motherwort may cause mild drowsiness in some people.
- Blood sugar: marshmallow may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
- Allergies: hawthorn is a rose-family (Rosaceae) plant, motherwort a mint-family (Lamiaceae) plant, marshmallow a mallow-family (Malvaceae) plant.
