Leaves are sessile. The flowers are predominantly blue, sometimes white, rarely pink, collected in spreading thyroid inflorescences. The fruit is an ovoid spherical capsule with 6-10 seeds. Frequently Asked Questions about Flax Extract
What is Flax (Linum usitatissimum) seed extract?
Flax is an annual plant of the family Linaceae, botanically Linum usitatissimum - the same plant that gives us linen fiber and flaxseed. The part used here is the seed. Our raw material is cultivated in Canada, one of the world's main flax-growing regions, and the seed is dried before extraction. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label it clearly by botanical name and plant part, because flax reaches people in several very different forms and this is only one of them. It is worth saying plainly what this product is not: it is not flaxseed oil, it is not the edible ground or whole flaxseed you add to food, and it is not linen fiber - it is a liquid herbal extract of the seed, taken by the drop. Please read the safety section before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Linum usitatissimum seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this flaxseed oil, or the ground flaxseed you eat?
Neither, and the distinction matters because flax reaches people mainly in those two forms. Flaxseed oil is the oil pressed from the seed, sold as its own product; this is not that - it is a liquid extract of the seed in a glycerin or alcohol base, not a pressed oil. Ground and whole flaxseed are the edible seed itself, added to cereal, smoothies and baking as a food; this is not that either - it is a herbal extract taken by the drop, not a food you grind or bake with. And although flax is the same plant that produces linen fiber and linseed oil for wood and paint, this product is the seed extract, nothing to do with textiles or wood finishing. One naming note: linseed is simply the British name for flaxseed, but be aware that linseed oil is often an industrial product. Our flax is Linum usitatissimum, the seed, prepared as a liquid herbal extract. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so it is clear which flax product you are getting.
How do I use Flax liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents with plenty of water. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Flax extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this before use. Flax seed naturally contains compounds called cyanogenic glycosides, which is one reason not to exceed the suggested serving of a concentrated preparation. Flax also contains lignans, which are plant compounds with mild estrogen-like activity, so if you have a hormone-sensitive condition such as breast, uterine or ovarian concerns, speak with your practitioner first, and avoid flax during pregnancy; if you are nursing, consult your practitioner. Flax seed is rich in mucilage and swells with water, so always take this product with plenty of fluid; do not use it if you have a bowel obstruction or a narrowing of the esophagus. Because flax can slow the absorption of medication taken by mouth, separate it from any oral medicines by a couple of hours. This product is not intended for young children. If you take any medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Flax (Linum Usitatissimum) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
