Frequently Asked Questions about Buckthorn Extract
What is Buckthorn Bark (Frangula alnus) extract?
Buckthorn, botanically Frangula alnus (also written Rhamnus frangula) and commonly called alder buckthorn or glossy buckthorn, is a deciduous shrub of the family Rhamnaceae native to Europe and Western Asia, growing 3 to 6 meters tall with a bright yellow inner bark. The part used here is the dried, aged bark, sourced from Hungary. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. Importantly, this is the buckthorn bark of Frangula - it is a completely different plant from Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), which is an edible berry we sell as a separate product; the two share only the word "buckthorn." It is in the same botanical family as Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana), which we also sell separately. We label the botanical name (Frangula alnus) and the plant part (bark) on every page. Please read the important safety information below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Frangula alnus bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent (48% alcohol by volume), together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both are taken by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. With either form, please read the safety information below - this is a herb to use only under professional guidance.
Is this Sea Buckthorn, Cascara, or common buckthorn?
No to all three - this is buckthorn bark, Frangula alnus, and the distinctions matter. It is NOT Sea Buckthorn: that is Hippophae rhamnoides, an edible orange berry we sell as a separate product, and it is a completely different plant that just happens to share the word "buckthorn." It is also not Cascara, though the two are related - Cascara is Rhamnus purshiana, another Rhamnaceae bark we offer separately. And it is not "common buckthorn" (Rhamnus cathartica), a different, invasive species. This product is specifically Frangula alnus, the alder buckthorn, and the part is the aged bark. We print the botanical name and plant part on every page so the exact plant is clear.
How is Buckthorn Bark used, and how much?
Shake well before use. The traditional suggested amount is 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Only aged, dried bark should ever be used. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and please read the safety information below before use.
Safety: who should NOT use Buckthorn Bark, and important cautions.
This is a potent traditional herb; use it only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Only aged, dried bark should be used - fresh bark causes severe vomiting and cramping. Do not use this product if you are pregnant or nursing, and do not give it to children. Do not use it if you have intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, undiagnosed abdominal pain, or an inflammatory bowel condition such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Do not use it for more than one to two weeks or on a habitual basis: prolonged use of this kind of herb can lead to dependence and to loss of potassium and other electrolytes. Do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication (for example, heart medication or diuretics) or have any medical condition, consult your physician before use, and discontinue use if any adverse reaction occurs. Keep out of the reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dry place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Buckthorn (Frangula Alnus) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
