Buckthorn (Frangula alnus), the alder buckthorn or glossy buckthorn, is a deciduous shrub of the buckthorn family, Rhamnaceae, native to damp woods, fens, and hedgerows across Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, and an invasive species in the northeastern United States and Great Lakes region. Despite the name it has no thorns; it grows 3 to 6 meters with smooth, dark grey-brown bark marked with pale lenticels, glossy oval leaves with 7 to 9 pairs of curved veins, and inconspicuous greenish-white flowers. The pea-sized berries ripen from green through red to black, often all three colors at once. Its wood once made charcoal for gunpowder. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
