Frequently Asked Questions about Carline Thistle Extract
What is Carline Thistle (Carlina acaulis) root extract?
Carline thistle is a low, stemless thistle of the Asteraceae family; its botanical name is Carlina acaulis, and the root is known in pharmacy as Radix Carlinae. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried root. It has a long history of folk use in Europe (it is also called silver thistle or Eberwurz). One safety point matters most: the root contains carlina oxide, a naturally occurring toxic component of its essential oil, so do not exceed the suggested serving, keep to short-term use, and note that it is not for use in pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Carlina acaulis root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is carline thistle the same as milk thistle or blessed thistle?
No - these are different plants that only share the word "thistle," so the botanical name matters. Our carline thistle is Carlina acaulis (root). Milk thistle is Silybum marianum (we sell its seed and its leaf), and blessed thistle is Cnicus benedictus (we sell its leaf, stem and flower) - all three are in the Asteraceae family but are different genera with different uses and different safety profiles. We label ours clearly as Carlina acaulis so it is not confused with the others.
How do I use Carline Thistle liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because the root contains carlina oxide, do NOT exceed the suggested serving and keep to short-term use. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Carline Thistle right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Toxic component: carline thistle root contains carlina oxide, a naturally occurring toxic component of its essential oil (the same compound studied as a natural insecticide), so do NOT exceed the suggested serving and keep to short-term use only. Higher amounts have caused toxicity in animal studies. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and avoid it while breastfeeding. Allergies: as a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it may cause a reaction in people allergic to ragweed, chamomile, or related plants. Medications: if you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Carline Thistle (Carlina Acaulis) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
