Frequently Asked Questions about Cassia Extract
What is Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) bark?
Cassia is a type of cinnamon - an evergreen tree of the laurel family (Lauraceae), botanically Cinnamomum cassia, native to southern China and Southeast Asia. It is often called Chinese cinnamon or cassia cinnamon, and in fact most of the ground "cinnamon" sold in North America is cassia. The part used here is the bark. This is a bark liquid extract, offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from carefully sourced raw material. One important point to know from the start: cassia is different from Ceylon or "true" cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), and it naturally contains more of a compound called coumarin, so please read the safety information below. This is a whole-bark extract that carries the spice's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cinnamomum cassia bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the spice's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
What is the difference between cassia and Ceylon cinnamon (and cassia senna)?
This is an important distinction. There are two main kinds of cinnamon. Ours is cassia, or Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) - the bolder, more common type, and the one usually sold simply as "cinnamon" in North America. The other is Ceylon, or "true," cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), which is milder and naturally much lower in a compound called coumarin. Because cassia contains more coumarin, it is important not to exceed the suggested serving - see the safety note. Separately, do not confuse cassia cinnamon with "cassia senna": the word "cassia" is also used for plants in the Senna genus, which are completely different plants used as laxatives and ornamentals. Our product is the cinnamon bark, Cinnamomum cassia, not senna. We label it clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with Ceylon cinnamon or with senna.
How do I use Cassia liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Cassia extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because cassia cinnamon has some important safety considerations. Cassia is naturally high in a compound called coumarin - much higher than Ceylon cinnamon - and large or regular amounts of coumarin can be hard on the liver. For this reason, do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use cassia if you have liver disease. Coumarin can also thin the blood, so use caution and speak with your practitioner if you take blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, or before any planned surgery. Cassia may also lower blood sugar, so if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication or insulin, use caution, monitor your levels, and consult your practitioner first. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using a concentrated extract. Do not use if you are allergic to cinnamon. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, also consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not exceed the suggested serving. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Cassia (Cinnamomum Cassia) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
