Calm Mood Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three classic European herbs extracted together in equal parts. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product. Because it contains St. John's wort, it must not be combined with many prescription medicines - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Lemon balm - a bushy mint-family herb with a bright lemon scent, grown in European gardens since antiquity and used as a tea and culinary herb; the leaf is used.
  • St. John's wort - a sunny meadow plant with star-shaped yellow flowers that bloom around midsummer; the flowering tops turn extracts a deep red. It is one of the most studied herbs in Europe, and also one of the most likely to interact with medicines.
  • Valerian - the pale, stringy root of a tall pink-flowered meadow plant, famous for its pungent, earthy smell and one of the oldest herbs of the European evening tradition.

Why a tincture

The three dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method, and the traditional way to capture St. John's wort's red pigments and valerian root. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharp, lemony-bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It may cause drowsiness - see how it affects you before driving, and do not combine it with alcohol. Use it in short courses rather than continuously, and protect your skin from strong sun while using it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as Calm Mood Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains St. John's wort, which interacts with many prescription medicines. Please read before use.

  • Prescription medicines: St. John's wort speeds up the breakdown of many drugs. It can make oral contraceptives fail, and it reduces the effect of warfarin, digoxin, statins, HIV antiretrovirals, transplant immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, some chemotherapy and many other medicines. If you take any prescription medication, do not use this blend without checking with your pharmacist or doctor.
  • Antidepressants: do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol or triptans - the combination can cause serotonin syndrome, which is dangerous.
  • Drowsiness: valerian and lemon balm can cause drowsiness. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and do not combine with alcohol, sedatives or other products that slow the nervous system.
  • Sun: St. John's wort can make skin more sensitive to sunlight - avoid strong sun and tanning beds while using it.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
  • Thyroid: lemon balm may affect thyroid function - consult your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
  • Duration: use in short courses. Stopping suddenly after weeks of daily high-dose valerian has caused withdrawal-type symptoms.
  • Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with valerian products. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Calm Mood Tincture?
Calm Mood is a three-herb liquid blend: lemon balm leaf (Melissa officinalis), St. John's wort herb (Hypericum perforatum) and valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. All three are classic herbs of European tradition and are also sold on their own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - because it contains St. John's wort, this blend must not be combined with many prescription medicines, and it is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a sharp, lemony-bitter taste with the earthy note of valerian. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Can I take Calm Mood with my medication? How is it different from Relaxed Mood?
Check with your pharmacist or doctor first. St. John's wort is well known for changing how the body processes many prescription medicines - it can make oral contraceptives, blood thinners, heart medicines, HIV and transplant medicines and some cancer drugs less effective, and it must not be combined with antidepressants. If you take any prescription medication, do not use this blend without that check. Relaxed Mood is a different four-herb blend of hawthorn berry, lemon balm, St. John's wort and skullcap; Calm Mood is the three-herb blend with valerian root and without hawthorn or skullcap. The two share lemon balm and St. John's wort, so the same medication caution applies to both. Compare the ingredient lists and choose the one that fits you.
