Calm Mood Alcohol-Free Drops
Calm Mood Alcohol-Free Glycerite, Lemon Balm Leaf, Saint John's Wort Herb, Valerian RootCalm Mood Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three classic European herbs extracted together in equal parts. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product. Because it contains St. John's wort, it must not be combined with many prescription medicines - please read the safety information below before use.
- Lemon balm, leaf - Melissa officinalis leaf (Lamiaceae)
- St. John's wort, herb - Hypericum perforatum flowering tops (Hypericaceae)
- Valerian, root - Valeriana officinalis root (Caprifoliaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Lemon balm - a bushy mint-family herb with a bright lemon scent, grown in European gardens since antiquity and used as a tea and culinary herb; the leaf is used.
- St. John's wort - a sunny meadow plant with star-shaped yellow flowers that bloom around midsummer; the flowering tops turn extracts a deep red. It is one of the most studied herbs in Europe, and also one of the most likely to interact with medicines.
- Valerian - the pale, stringy root of a tall pink-flowered meadow plant, famous for its pungent, earthy smell and one of the oldest herbs of the European evening tradition.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the earthy bitterness of valerian.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. It may cause drowsiness - see how it affects you before driving, and do not combine it with alcohol. Use it in short courses rather than continuously, and protect your skin from strong sun while using it. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Calm Mood Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
This blend contains St. John's wort, which interacts with many prescription medicines. Please read before use.
- Prescription medicines: St. John's wort speeds up the breakdown of many drugs. It can make oral contraceptives fail, and it reduces the effect of warfarin, digoxin, statins, HIV antiretrovirals, transplant immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and tacrolimus, some chemotherapy and many other medicines. If you take any prescription medication, do not use this blend without checking with your pharmacist or doctor.
- Antidepressants: do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol or triptans - the combination can cause serotonin syndrome, which is dangerous.
- Drowsiness: valerian and lemon balm can cause drowsiness. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and do not combine with alcohol, sedatives or other products that slow the nervous system.
- Sun: St. John's wort can make skin more sensitive to sunlight - avoid strong sun and tanning beds while using it.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery or anesthesia.
- Thyroid: lemon balm may affect thyroid function - consult your doctor if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication.
- Duration: use in short courses. Stopping suddenly after weeks of daily high-dose valerian has caused withdrawal-type symptoms.
- Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with valerian products. Stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine.
- Age: not for children.
- If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
