Night Blooming Cereus (Cereus Grandifloras or Selenicereus Grandiflorus) is a climbing cactus with vining, cylindrical stems. The stems are green to bluish-green, becoming purplish along the ribs and having small radiating spines. The very large, 8-12 inch flowers are terminal and lateral from the spine clusters. The prefix “Seleni” in the botanical name refers to the moon, in allusion to the nocturnal blooms, which are very large and full-bodied. Night blooming cereus is native to the desert and semi-desert regions of the Antilles, tropical America, Mexico, and the southern United States.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Cereus Extract
What is Night Blooming Cereus (Selenicereus grandiflorus) flower extract?
Night blooming cereus is a climbing cactus of the family Cactaceae, botanically Selenicereus grandiflorus, native to the Antilles, tropical America, Mexico and the southern United States. It has slender, vining, cylindrical stems and produces very large flowers, eight to twelve inches across, which open after dark and fade by morning - the reason it is also called queen of the night. The part used here is the dried flower, sometimes listed as the inflorescence. The plant was for a long time classified as Cereus grandiflorus, and in older pharmacy texts as Cactus grandiflorus; both are historical synonyms, and the accepted botanical name today is Selenicereus grandiflorus. Our extract is offered in two forms, an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, both from ethically sourced material. This is a whole-flower liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Selenicereus grandiflorus flower; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the flower's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as the night blooming cereus houseplant?
Not necessarily, and this is the most common confusion with this plant. Night blooming cereus is not one species but a nickname shared by several unrelated night-flowering cacti. Ours is Selenicereus grandiflorus. The plant most often grown indoors under the same name is Epiphyllum oxypetalum, a different genus entirely; others in the group belong to Peniocereus, and there is also a genuinely separate genus called Cereus, which despite the name is not the same as Selenicereus. So the label on a garden centre plant is not a reliable guide to which species it is. There is a second point worth making: this product is the dried flower prepared as a liquid extract, not a plant for growing. We also sell other cacti as their own products - Nopal cactus (Opuntia streptacantha) and Pitahaya or dragonfruit (Hylocereus undatus, a close relative of Selenicereus) - and they are different plants and different parts. We label the botanical name (Selenicereus grandiflorus) and plant part (flower) on every page so you know exactly what you are buying.
How do I use Night Blooming Cereus liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Night Blooming Cereus extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Please read this section before use. This plant has a long historical association with preparations used for the heart, so if you take any medication for your heart or for blood pressure, talk with your doctor before using this product, and do not use it in place of treatment your doctor has prescribed. Concentrated preparations of this cactus can irritate the skin, the mouth and the digestive tract, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy, and avoid it while nursing. Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
