Frequently Asked Questions about Che Qian Zi Extract
What is Che Qian Zi / Asian plantain seed (Plantago asiatica) extract?
Che Qian Zi is the Chinese name for the dried seed of Plantago asiatica, a plant of the plantain family (Plantaginaceae); the name means "cart-front seed." In pharmacy the seed is known as Semen Plantaginis. It is a close relative of the psyllium seed used in Western herbalism, and like psyllium it is a mucilaginous (gel-forming) seed. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite of the dried seed, taken by the drop. Please note the label states it is not to be used during pregnancy; see the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Plantago asiatica seed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The seed inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Che Qian Zi the same as plantain leaf or psyllium?
No - they are related but different, and the botanical name and plant part matter. Che Qian Zi is the seed of Plantago asiatica (Asian plantain), which we carry here. Plantain (the herb we list as "Plantain") is a different species and a different part - the leaf of Plantago major. Psyllium is yet another - the seed of Plantago ovata, or the husk of Plantago psyllium. All belong to the plantain genus (Plantago), and none of them is the banana-like cooking "plantain," which is an unrelated fruit. We label ours clearly as Plantago asiatica seed.
How do I use Che Qian Zi / plantain-seed liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is a mucilaginous seed, take it with plenty of water, and separate it from other oral medications by a couple of hours so it does not slow their absorption. Do not use it during pregnancy. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Che Qian Zi right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and nursing: the label states this product is not to be used during pregnancy; if you are nursing, consult your practitioner before use. Fluids and diuretic effect: Che Qian Zi is a mucilaginous seed that traditionally promotes urination, so drink plenty of water, be mindful of your fluid and electrolyte balance, and use caution if you take diuretic ("water pill") medication. Medication spacing: because the seed forms a gel, it can slow the absorption of other oral medicines - take it with plenty of water and separate it from other medications by a couple of hours. If you take blood-thinning or cholesterol medication, or any other medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
