Important safety information - please read before use

Chinese yam is an edible food and generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply.

  • Hormones: it contains diosgenin, which has mild estrogen-like activity, so if you have a hormone-sensitive condition or take hormone medicines, talk to your doctor before using concentrated amounts. (Note: diosgenin is not converted into DHEA, progesterone or estrogen in the body, despite common marketing claims.)
  • Pregnancy / nursing: although it is a traditional food, safety data for concentrated extracts is limited - do NOT use it during pregnancy without medical advice, and consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Raw tuber: the fresh raw tuber can irritate the skin, mouth and throat because of calcium-oxalate crystals - much less of an issue in an extract, but handle raw yam with care.
  • Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chinese Yam Extract
What is Chinese Yam / Shan Yao (Dioscorea polystachya) tuber extract?
Chinese yam is a liquid extract of the dried tuber of Dioscorea polystachya, an edible yam of the Dioscoreaceae family, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Shan Yao (or Huai Shan) and in Japan as nagaimo. You may also see it under the older synonyms Dioscorea opposita or Dioscorea batatas - they are the same plant. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Chinese yam is widely eaten as a food and is regarded as a gentle tonic, but two points are worth noting: it contains diosgenin, a compound with mild estrogen-like activity (a caution for hormone-sensitive situations), and it should be distinguished from the other, very different "yams" listed below - including Air Yam (Dioscorea bulbifera), which is toxic. Please read the safety notes.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Dioscorea polystachya tuber; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The tuber inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is Chinese Yam the same as Shan Yao, Wild Yam or the other yams?
Chinese Yam and Shan Yao are the same plant - Dioscorea polystachya (also written Dioscorea opposita or batatas) - so if you have seen it under either name, it is the same tuber. But it is NOT the same as the other yams we sell, which are different species: Wild Yam is Dioscorea villosa (a separate species often marketed for its diosgenin); Long Yam is Dioscorea hypoglauca (Bei Xie); and Air Yam is Dioscorea bulbifera (Huang Yao Zi), which is toxic and used quite differently. Despite popular claims, none of these yams is a source of DHEA, progesterone or estrogen that the body can use - diosgenin is not converted into human hormones in the body. We label ours clearly as Chinese yam / Shan Yao (Dioscorea polystachya) tuber.
How do I use Chinese Yam liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because of the hormone-related and pregnancy cautions below, please read the safety information before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Chinese Yam right for everyone? Safety information.
Chinese yam (Shan Yao) is an edible food and is generally well tolerated, but a few notes apply. Hormones: it contains diosgenin, which has mild estrogen-like activity in the body, so if you have a hormone-sensitive condition (for example certain breast, uterine or ovarian conditions) or take hormone medicines, talk to your doctor before using concentrated amounts. (Note that diosgenin is not converted into DHEA, progesterone or estrogen in the body, despite common marketing claims.) Pregnancy and nursing: although it is a traditional food, safety data for concentrated extracts is limited, so do NOT use it during pregnancy without medical advice, and consult a practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Raw tuber: the fresh raw tuber can irritate the skin, mouth and throat because of calcium-oxalate crystals - this is much less of an issue in an extract, but handle raw yam with care.
