Cholesterol Formula Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three ingredients extracted together in equal parts: a red hedgerow berry, the silvery leaf of the olive tree and the seed husk of an Indian plantain. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product and not a replacement for any prescribed medication - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Hawthorn, berry - Crataegus laevigata berry (Rosaceae)
  • Olive, leaf - Olea europaea leaf (Oleaceae)
  • Psyllium, husk - Plantago psyllium seed husk (Plantaginaceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced cultivated botanicals (hawthorn from Chile, psyllium from India, olive leaf from Turkey). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Hawthorn berry - the small red fruit of a thorny tree of hedgerows and woodland edges, one of the classic European hedge plants; the berry is used here, while the leaf and flower are a separate preparation.
  • Olive leaf - the narrow, leathery, gray-green leaf of the Mediterranean olive tree, the same tree that gives olives and olive oil; the leaf has a distinctly bitter taste.
  • Psyllium husk - the thin, pale outer coat of the seed of a plantain relative cultivated in the dry plains of India. In a liquid extract it is a flavor-neutral ingredient; it is the powdered husk, not this extract, that is used as a bulk fiber.

Why a tincture

The three dried ingredients are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, slightly fruity taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a full glass of water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. If you take any medication, take this blend at least two hours apart from it. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-ingredient blend is available as Cholesterol Formula Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The ingredients and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs. Our Blood Pressure Support Tincture is a different blend that uses hawthorn leaf and flower rather than the berry.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend interacts with heart and blood-pressure medicines and contains psyllium, a known allergen. Please read before use.

  • Not a substitute for medication: this is an herbal product. If you have been diagnosed with a heart condition or a lipid disorder, use it only with your doctor, and never stop or change prescribed medication, including statins, on your own.
  • Heart and blood-pressure medication: hawthorn can interact with digoxin, beta-blockers, nitrates, calcium-channel blockers and antihypertensives, and olive leaf may add to the effect of blood-pressure medicines. Do not use with any of them without your doctor.
  • Psyllium allergy: psyllium has caused serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Do not use if you are allergic to psyllium or plantain-family plants. Seek emergency care for hives, swelling or difficulty breathing.
  • Medication timing: psyllium can slow the absorption of medicines - take this blend at least two hours apart from any medication, with a full glass of water.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Blood sugar: olive leaf and psyllium may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Surgery: stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
  • Allergies: olive is an olive-family (Oleaceae) plant and hawthorn a rose-family (Rosaceae) plant.
  • Age: not for children.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cholesterol Formula Tincture?
Cholesterol Formula is a three-ingredient liquid blend: hawthorn berry (Crataegus laevigata), olive leaf (Olea europaea) and psyllium husk (Plantago psyllium), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Hawthorn is the small red fruit of a thorny hedgerow tree, olive leaf the silvery leaf of the Mediterranean olive tree, and psyllium husk the thin seed coat of a plantain relative grown in India; each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule and not a fiber powder. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not a replacement for any prescribed medication.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three ingredients in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, slightly fruity taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this hawthorn berry or hawthorn leaf? Which psyllium is in it?
This blend uses the hawthorn berry, the red fruit; hawthorn leaf and flower are a different preparation of the same tree, used in our Blood Pressure Support blend. The psyllium here is the husk, the thin outer coat of the seed, from the species listed on the label as Plantago psyllium; in a liquid extract it does not act as a bulk fiber the way psyllium powder does, but people allergic to psyllium must still avoid it. The olive is the leaf, not the fruit or the oil. All three ingredients are also available as single extracts.
