Cold Season Protection Tincture
Cold Season Protection Tincture, Eucalyptus Leaf, Goldenseal Leaf, Peppermint LeafCold Season Protection Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three leaves extracted together: the aromatic leaf of the Australian blue gum, the leaf of the American goldenseal plant, and the cool leaf of peppermint. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product for adults only - goldenseal interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy - please read the safety information below before use.
- Eucalyptus, leaf - Eucalyptus globulus leaf (Myrtaceae) - whole-leaf extract, not the essential oil
- Goldenseal, leaf - Hydrastis canadensis leaf (Ranunculaceae) - the leaf, not the root
- Peppermint, leaf - Mentha x piperita leaf (Lamiaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (eucalyptus from Chile, goldenseal and peppermint from the USA). Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Eucalyptus leaf - the long, sickle-shaped, blue-grey leaf of the Tasmanian blue gum, extracted whole - a very different thing from the distilled essential oil. The leaf carries cineole, which is why this blend is for adults only.
- Goldenseal leaf - the broad, lobed leaf of a small plant of the eastern American hardwood forests, a relative of the buttercup. The leaf holds the same bitter yellow alkaloids as the well-known root, including berberine, but in smaller amounts; the root is the part listed under CITES, so the leaf is the more sustainable choice.
- Peppermint leaf - the leaf of the familiar garden mint, a natural hybrid of water mint and spearmint, with its cool menthol scent.
Why a tincture
The three dried leaves are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a cool, camphor-like, bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use for short periods only - goldenseal is traditionally taken for two to three weeks at a time, not continuously. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-leaf blend is available as Cold Season Protection Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The leaves and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Adults only. Goldenseal interacts with most prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy; eucalyptus is unsuitable for children. Please read before use.
- Children and infants: eucalyptus leaf contains cineole, which has caused seizures and drowsiness in children even in small amounts, and berberine in goldenseal can cause or worsen jaundice in newborns. This blend is for adults only; never give it to children.
- Prescription medicines: goldenseal blocks the liver enzymes that process most drugs (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) and can raise the levels of many medicines. Ask your pharmacist before combining this blend with any prescription medicine, including blood thinners, blood-pressure drugs, antidepressants, sedatives and cyclosporine.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Seizure disorders: do not use if you have a history of seizures.
- Do not exceed the label serving: too much eucalyptus can cause nausea, dizziness or drowsiness. Stop and seek medical help if these occur.
- Digestion: peppermint can relax the valve at the top of the stomach. Avoid if you have chronic heartburn, reflux or a hiatal hernia, and consult your doctor if you have gallstones.
- Blood sugar and blood pressure: berberine can lower both. Use caution with related medication.
- Duration: use for short periods only; not for continuous use.
- Allergies: peppermint is a mint-family (Lamiaceae) plant, eucalyptus a myrtle-family (Myrtaceae) plant and goldenseal a buttercup-family (Ranunculaceae) plant.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
