Frequently Asked Questions about Lalang Grass Extract
What is Lalang Grass / Bai Mao Gen (Imperata cylindrica) rhizome extract?
Lalang Grass is a liquid extract of the dried rhizome of Imperata cylindrica, a grass of the Poaceae family known in traditional Chinese medicine as Bai Mao Gen (Rhizoma Imperatae). It is also called cogongrass, blady grass, speargrass or satintail. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Bai Mao Gen is regarded as a food-grade herb with a good safety record. A couple of practical notes: it has a natural diuretic (fluid-flushing) action from its high potassium content, and it is not recommended during pregnancy. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Imperata cylindrica rhizome; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The rhizome inside is identical.
Is Lalang Grass the same as Bai Mao Gen or cogongrass?
Yes - they are all the same plant, Imperata cylindrica. "Bai Mao Gen" is its traditional Chinese medicine name (the rhizome), while "lalang grass," "cogongrass," "blady grass," "speargrass" and "satintail" are common names for the same grass, and you may also see it listed as "white grass." So if you have seen this plant under any of those names, it is the same rhizome. Note that Imperata is also grown as an ornamental grass and is considered an invasive weed in some regions, but the medicinal material is the traditional Bai Mao Gen rhizome. We label ours clearly as Imperata cylindrica rhizome.
How do I use Lalang Grass liquid extract?
Shake well first. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because it has a diuretic action, take it earlier in the day if you find it affects sleep, and keep well hydrated. This alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Lalang Grass right for everyone? Safety information.
Imperata cylindrica (Bai Mao Gen) is a food-grade herb with a good safety record and no well-known adverse drug interactions, but a few sensible notes apply. Diuretic action: it increases urine output (high potassium), so use caution if you take diuretic ("water pill") medication, have an electrolyte imbalance, or have kidney disease. Blood clotting: it tends to promote clotting, so if you are on anticoagulant ("blood thinner") therapy use it only under professional supervision. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy, and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding. Traditional-medicine note: it is generally avoided by those with weak, cold digestion (spleen deficiency). If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Store as directed on the label. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
