Cold Season Support Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts: the sweet, fibrous root of astragalus and the leaf of goldenseal. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - goldenseal interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy - please read the safety information below before use.
- Astragalus, root - Astragalus membranaceus root (Fabaceae; huang qi)
- Goldenseal, leaf - Hydrastis canadensis leaf (Ranunculaceae) - the leaf, not the root
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Astragalus root - huang qi, the long yellow root of a perennial legume of the grasslands of northern China and Mongolia, harvested after four or more years and sliced into the flat, fibrous pieces familiar from Chinese herb shops; it tastes faintly sweet.
- Goldenseal leaf - the broad, lobed leaf of a small woodland plant of the eastern American hardwood forests, a relative of the buttercup. The leaf carries the same bitter yellow alkaloids as the well-known root, including berberine, but in smaller amounts; the root is the part listed under CITES, so the leaf is the more sustainable choice.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sweet-then-bitter taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use for short periods only - goldenseal is traditionally taken for two to three weeks at a time, not continuously. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as Cold Season Support Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Goldenseal interacts with most prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy; astragalus is unsuitable for autoimmune conditions. Please read before use.
- Prescription medicines: goldenseal blocks the liver enzymes that process most drugs (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) and can raise the levels of many medicines. Ask your pharmacist before combining this blend with any prescription medicine, including blood thinners, blood-pressure drugs, antidepressants, sedatives and cyclosporine.
- Pregnancy, nursing and infants: do not use. Berberine in goldenseal can cause or worsen jaundice in newborns.
- Autoimmune conditions and immunosuppressants: astragalus can stimulate the immune system. Do not use if you have an autoimmune condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or multiple sclerosis, or if you take immunosuppressant medicines, including after a transplant.
- Lithium: astragalus can raise lithium levels. Do not combine.
- Blood sugar and blood pressure: berberine can lower both. Use caution with diabetes or blood-pressure medication.
- Duration: use for short periods only; not for continuous use.
- Age: not for children.
- Allergies: astragalus is a legume-family (Fabaceae) plant; goldenseal is a buttercup-family (Ranunculaceae) plant.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
