Respiratory Care Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of three roots extracted together in equal parts: the sweet root of the liquorice legume, the pungent ginger rhizome and the steamed root of Asian ginseng. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product, not for emergencies and not a replacement for any prescribed inhaler or medication - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Liquorice root - the long, woody root of a Mediterranean and West Asian legume, intensely sweet from glycyrrhizin. It is the real liquorice; many licorice candies contain none of it and are flavored with anise instead.
  • Ginger root - the knobbly rhizome of a tropical plant of the ginger family, the same spice used fresh and dried in kitchens worldwide, pungent and warming.
  • Red ginseng - the root of Asian ginseng, Panax ginseng, steamed and dried by the traditional Korean method that turns it reddish-brown. It is a different species from American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) of the eastern North American forests.

Why a tincture

The three dried roots are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sweet, warming taste from liquorice and ginger, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Because of the liquorice, do not use this blend for more than four weeks at a time without talking to your practitioner, and take it earlier in the day because red ginseng can be stimulating. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same three-herb blend is available as Respiratory Care Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains liquorice root and is not for emergencies. Please read before use.

  • Not for emergencies: this is an herbal product. It must never replace a prescribed inhaler or any breathing medication, and it is of no use in an emergency. If you have been diagnosed with a breathing condition, keep taking your prescribed treatment and use this blend only with your doctor.
  • Blood pressure, potassium and heart: liquorice root can raise blood pressure, lower potassium and cause fluid retention or an irregular heartbeat with regular use. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease or low potassium.
  • Medicines: do not combine liquorice with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids or blood-pressure medication without your doctor.
  • Blood thinners and surgery: red ginseng may reduce the effect of warfarin, and ginger may slow blood clotting. Consult your doctor if you take any blood thinner, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Blood sugar: ginseng may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Antidepressants and hormones: do not combine ginseng with MAOI antidepressants, and avoid it if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Respiratory Care Tincture?
Respiratory Care is a three-herb liquid blend: liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), ginger root (Zingiber officinale) and red ginseng root (steamed Panax ginseng), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Liquorice is the sweet root of a Mediterranean legume, ginger the pungent rhizome of the kitchen spice, and red ginseng the steamed root of Asian ginseng; each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not for emergencies and is not a replacement for any prescribed inhaler or medication.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a sweet, warming taste from liquorice and ginger. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is this the same licorice as in candy? Is red ginseng the same as American ginseng?
This blend uses real liquorice root, Glycyrrhiza glabra, which owes its sweetness to glycyrrhizin; many licorice candies contain no liquorice at all and are flavored with anise instead, which is why the safety cautions for the root do not apply to the candy and vice versa. Red ginseng is the root of Asian ginseng, Panax ginseng, steamed and dried by the traditional Korean method; it is a different species from American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, which grows wild in the forests of eastern North America. Ginger here is the dried rhizome of the same plant used in cooking. All three herbs are also available as single extracts.
