Coughout Tincture - Marshmallow Root, Mullein Flower, Thyme and Licorice Herbal Blend

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of four herbs extracted together in equal parts. Coughout is the name of the blend; it is a traditional herbal product, not a capsule. Please read the safety information below before use.

  • Marshmallow root - Althaea officinalis root (Malvaceae; naturally rich in mucilage)
  • Mullein flower - Verbascum thapsus flower (Scrophulariaceae)
  • Thyme leaf - Thymus vulgaris leaf (Lamiaceae)
  • Licorice root - Glycyrrhiza glabra root (Fabaceae; naturally contains glycyrrhizin)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Marshmallow root - the root of a tall pink-flowered mallow of wet meadows, rich in mucilage that turns slippery in water; the original confectionery marshmallow was made from it.
  • Mullein flower - the small yellow flowers of the great mullein, a woolly roadside plant of Europe and North America.
  • Thyme leaf - the familiar Mediterranean kitchen herb, a small shrub of the mint family.
  • Licorice root - the sweet root of European licorice; its sweetness comes from glycyrrhizin, which is also the reason for the cautions below.

Why a tincture

The four dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a sharper herbal taste (sweet from the licorice, aromatic from the thyme), and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Because marshmallow root can slow the absorption of medicines, take any medication one to two hours before or after these drops. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same four-herb blend is available as Coughout Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

This blend contains four herbs. Please note the following before use.

  • Blood pressure and potassium (licorice): licorice root naturally contains glycyrrhizin, which with regular or prolonged use can raise blood pressure, lower potassium and cause fluid retention. Do not use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease or low potassium. Use caution with diuretics, digoxin, corticosteroids or blood-pressure medication, and do not use it continuously.
  • Medication timing (marshmallow): marshmallow root can slow the absorption of other medicines. Take medication one to two hours apart from this blend.
  • Blood thinners (thyme): thyme may add to the effect of warfarin and other anticoagulants - consult your practitioner.
  • Blood sugar (marshmallow): may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Allergies: thyme is a mint-family (Lamiaceae) plant and mullein is a figwort-family (Scrophulariaceae) plant - avoid if you are sensitive to either family.
  • Contains alcohol. Keep to the label serving. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Coughout Tincture?
Coughout is a four-herb liquid blend: marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), mullein flower (Verbascum thapsus), thyme leaf (Thymus vulgaris) and licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), extracted together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. It is a traditional herbal tincture, not a capsule. Each of the four herbs is also sold on its own; the blend combines them in equal parts. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below, because licorice carries specific cautions.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same four herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a sharper herbal taste. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What is each herb in the blend?
Marshmallow root is the root of Althaea officinalis, a tall pink-flowered mallow of wet meadows; the root is rich in mucilage, which gives it a slippery texture in water. Mullein flower is the small yellow flower of the great mullein, a common roadside plant. Thyme leaf is the familiar kitchen herb Thymus vulgaris, a mint-family shrublet of the Mediterranean. Licorice root is the sweet root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, the European licorice, which naturally contains glycyrrhizin. All four are sold individually on our site if you prefer a single herb.
