Frequently Asked Questions about Duckweed Extract
What is Duckweed Herb (Spirodela polyrhiza) extract?
Duckweed herb extract is a dietary supplement made from the whole herb of Spirodela polyrhiza, the greater duckweed, a small floating aquatic plant of the family Lemnaceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called Fu Ping, and in pharmacy references it appears as Herba Spirodelae. Our extract is made from cultivated, tested raw material and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. We label the product by its botanical name so it is clear this is Spirodela polyrhiza, distinct from other duckweeds and from duckweed grown as a protein food.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Spirodela polyrhiza herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional cold-maceration blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this pond duckweed, common duckweed, or Mankai?
Not exactly any of those. Duckweed is a name for several tiny floating aquatic plants, and it is most familiar as the green cover that grows on ponds and in aquariums - which many people actually try to remove. Our product is different: it is a controlled herbal extract of one specific species, Spirodela polyrhiza (the greater duckweed), made from cultivated and tested material, not scooped from a wild pond. It is a different species from Lemna minor, the common or lesser duckweed. And it is not the same as Mankai or water lentils, which are the genus Wolffia (Wolffia globosa), grown and sold as a high-protein food - ours is Spirodela polyrhiza used as a traditional herb (Fu Ping). We label the product clearly by its botanical name so there is no confusion between our duckweed herb, pond and aquarium duckweed, other duckweed species, and duckweed protein foods.
How do I use Duckweed Herb liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Duckweed Herb extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Duckweed is an aquatic plant that can take up minerals and contaminants from the water it grows in, so it is important to use material that has been cultivated and tested - our raw material is lab-tested, including for heavy metals. As with any supplement, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size, and it is best avoided during pregnancy and nursing unless supervised by a practitioner. If you take any prescription medication or are managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Duckweed (Spirodela Polyrhiza) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
