Durian (Durio Zibethinus) is a large tree, reaching 150 feet, with a straight trunk. The leaves are alternate, about 10 inches long and 3 inches wide, green and glossy on the upper surface, silvery or bronze colored on the underside surface. Flowers are whitish, in cauliflorous clusters of 3-30, blooming at night and primarily pollinated by bats. Fruits are large, from 6-12 inches long, with a hard, green, spiny shell. The shell splits into five segments when ripe, exposing the creamy whitish, yellowish or pinkish aril which surrounds large seeds.*

Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

Please note the safety point below about durian and alcohol: because this version contains alcohol, do not combine it with additional alcoholic drinks; if you prefer to avoid alcohol entirely, choose the glycerite. Otherwise the botanical inside is identical.

Can I take the durian tincture with alcohol?

This is an important safety point specific to durian, and it matters most for this alcohol-based tincture. Durian naturally contains sulfur compounds that can interfere with aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), the enzyme your body uses to clear acetaldehyde, a byproduct of alcohol. When durian and alcohol are combined, acetaldehyde can build up faster, which may produce a reaction similar to the one caused by the medication disulfiram - flushing, nausea and a raised heart rate. For that reason we suggest you do not take this tincture together with alcoholic drinks. If you are sensitive or prefer to steer clear of alcohol altogether, choose our alcohol-free durian glycerite instead. When used sensibly and apart from alcohol, durian is enjoyed as a food throughout Southeast Asia.

How do I use Durian liquid extract?

Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.
