Feverfew and Ginger Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two herbs extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the bitter, feathery-leaved feverfew of European gardens and the pungent rhizome of ginger. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product with a few important cautions - it is not for pregnancy and both herbs affect blood clotting - please read the safety information below before use.
- Feverfew, herb - Tanacetum parthenium herb (Asteraceae)
- Ginger, root - Zingiber officinale rhizome (Zingiberaceae)
- Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Feverfew herb - a bushy perennial of the daisy family with small white-and-yellow flowers and strongly scented, feathery leaves, long grown in European cottage gardens; the flowering aerial parts are used. It is a different plant from chamomile, though the two are often confused.
- Ginger root - the knobbly, pungent rhizome of a tropical Asian plant, the same root used as a kitchen spice; the dried rhizome is extracted here.
Why a tincture
The two dried herbs are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, hot, spicy taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. If you have used it daily for a long period, reduce the serving gradually over a week or two rather than stopping suddenly. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-herb blend is available as Feverfew and Ginger Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Not for pregnancy; both herbs affect blood clotting; do not stop feverfew abruptly after long use. Please read before use.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use. Feverfew can stimulate the uterus.
- Bleeding and surgery: feverfew and ginger slow blood clotting, and ginger can increase the effect of warfarin. Do not combine with blood thinners or aspirin without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Stopping: after long daily use, taper off gradually rather than stopping abruptly.
- Gallstones: ginger increases bile flow. Consult your doctor if you have gallstones.
- Allergies: feverfew is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant. Avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chamomile, chrysanthemums or daisies.
- Stop use if you develop mouth soreness, mouth ulcers or stomach upset.
- Age: not for children.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
