Frequently Asked Questions about Gan Di Huang Extract
What is Gan Di Huang / Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) dried root extract?
Gan Di Huang is a liquid extract of the dried root of Rehmannia glutinosa, a plant known in the West as Chinese foxglove and in traditional Chinese herbalism as Di Huang - one of the 50 fundamental Chinese herbs. Specifically, this is the raw, dried root (Gan Di Huang or Sheng Di Huang), which is the cooling form, as distinct from the steamed and prepared root, Shu Di Huang. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-root liquid extract carrying the root's natural constituents, including iridoid glycosides such as catalpol, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced from India (Rehmannia is cultivated) and each batch is gluten free. Please read the safety notes below, especially the note about digestion, and see how this raw form differs from the prepared form.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Rehmannia glutinosa dried root; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical.
What is the difference between Gan Di Huang (raw) and Shu Di Huang (prepared)?
This is an important distinction in Chinese herbalism, because Rehmannia is used in two different processed forms and they are not interchangeable. This product is Gan Di Huang - the raw, dried Rehmannia root (also related to Sheng Di Huang, the fresh/raw form). The other form is Shu Di Huang, which is the prepared root: the raw root is mixed with wine and then steamed and dried repeatedly, traditionally nine times, until it becomes black, soft and sticky. The raw form (this one) is regarded as the cooling form, while the prepared Shu Di Huang is the warming form and is considered gentler on digestion. We sell both, as well as a general "Rehmannia" listing, and we label each by botanical name and processing form so there is no confusion. If your practitioner specified the prepared form, choose our Shu Di Huang instead.
How do I use Gan Di Huang / Rehmannia dried-root liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and see the safety notes below - in particular the note about digestion for this raw form. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Gan Di Huang / Rehmannia extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) has a favorable safety profile and centuries of traditional use, and is considered low in toxicity. There is one important point specific to this product: it is the RAW, dried form, which is cooling and can be harder on digestion than the prepared form. For that reason, if you have weak digestion, a poor appetite, indigestion or a tendency to loose stools or diarrhea, it is best not to use the raw form on its own, as it may cause bloating or loose stools; the prepared form (Shu Di Huang) is gentler on the stomach. As a general precaution with any concentrated extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
