What is Gastrointestinal Formula Alcohol-Free Drops?

Gastrointestinal Formula is a three-herb liquid blend: slippery elm inner bark (Ulmus rubra), marshmallow leaf (Althaea officinalis) and turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), extracted together in equal parts in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Slippery elm and marshmallow are the two classic mucilage-rich herbs of Western herbalism, and turmeric is the golden kitchen rhizome of South Asia; all three are also sold on their own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - this blend is not suitable for everyone.

What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?

Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a mild, naturally sweet taste, and a little of the slippery texture of the mucilage herbs; best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.

Is the marshmallow in this blend the leaf or the root? Where does the slippery elm come from?

The marshmallow in this blend is the leaf of Althaea officinalis, not the root. Both parts are rich in mucilage and both are used in herbalism; we sell marshmallow root and marshmallow leaf as separate single extracts, and this formula uses the leaf. Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) is a North American tree whose inner bark is used; because Dutch elm disease has reduced wild populations, it is listed as an at-risk plant by United Plant Savers, and responsible sourcing from managed harvests matters. The turmeric is the dried rhizome - the same golden underground stem used as a spice - which will tint the liquid and can stain fabric.

How do I use Gastrointestinal Formula Drops?

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Take it at least two hours apart from any medication (see the safety note). Turmeric is a strong yellow dye - wipe the dropper and avoid contact with fabric. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label. Keep out of reach of children.

Please read carefully. Medication timing: slippery elm and marshmallow are rich in mucilage, which can slow the absorption of medicines taken by mouth - take this blend at least two hours before or after any medication or supplement. Gallstones: do not use if you have gallstones or a bile-duct obstruction, because turmeric stimulates bile flow. Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with concentrated turmeric products; stay within the label serving, and stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, itching or unusual fatigue. Bleeding: turmeric may slow blood clotting - consult your doctor if you take warfarin, aspirin or other blood thinners, and stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. Blood sugar: turmeric and marshmallow may lower blood sugar - monitor if you take diabetes medication. Pregnancy and nursing: do not use - slippery elm and turmeric are traditionally avoided in pregnancy. Allergies: avoid if you are allergic to elm, to mallow-family plants such as hibiscus or okra, or to ginger-family plants. Not for children. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead.
