Ginseng and Echinacea Alcohol-Free Drops
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of two roots extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the steamed red root of Asian ginseng and the root of the purple coneflower. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - ginseng interacts with several common medicines - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend
- Red ginseng root - the forked root of Panax ginseng, a shade-loving perennial of the mountain forests of Korea and northeast China, cultivated for about six years before harvest. Steaming the fresh root and then drying it turns it reddish-brown and gives red ginseng its distinct profile; white ginseng is the same root simply dried.
- Echinacea root - the root of the purple coneflower of the North American prairie, with its drooping pink petals and spiny orange cone. The root has a characteristic tingling taste; the flowering herb of the same plant is a separate preparation.
Why the alcohol-free drops
The two dried roots are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, earthy note of the roots.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving; ginseng is best taken earlier in the day. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks without a practitioner. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same two-root blend is available as Ginseng and Echinacea Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The roots and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Ginseng interacts with warfarin, diabetes medicines and MAO-inhibitor antidepressants; echinacea is unsuitable for autoimmune conditions. Please read before use.
- Blood thinners: ginseng can reduce the effect of warfarin. Do not use this blend if you take warfarin unless your doctor agrees.
- Diabetes: ginseng can lower blood sugar and add to the effect of diabetes medication. Monitor closely and consult your doctor.
- Antidepressants: do not combine with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants.
- Autoimmune conditions and immunosuppressants: echinacea is not for people with autoimmune conditions, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis or HIV, or for anyone taking immunosuppressant medicines, including after a transplant.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions: ginseng contains estrogen-like compounds. Do not use if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
- Allergies: echinacea is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant. Avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies.
- Sleep, nerves and blood pressure: ginseng in high amounts can cause sleeplessness, nervousness or changes in blood pressure. Keep to the label serving, take it earlier in the day, and use caution if you have high blood pressure or a heart condition.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
- Age and duration: not for children. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
