Ginseng and Echinacea Tincture

This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two roots extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the steamed red root of Asian ginseng and the root of the purple coneflower. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product - ginseng interacts with several common medicines - please read the safety information below before use.

  • Red ginseng, root - Panax ginseng root, steamed and dried (Araliaceae)
  • Echinacea, root - Echinacea purpurea root (Asteraceae)
  • Extract type: Alcohol tincture. Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear purified water
  • Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (ginseng from China, echinacea from the USA). Gluten free. Made in the USA.

What is in the blend

  • Red ginseng root - the forked root of Panax ginseng, a shade-loving perennial of the mountain forests of Korea and northeast China, cultivated for about six years before harvest. Steaming the fresh root and then drying it turns it reddish-brown and gives red ginseng its distinct profile; white ginseng is the same root simply dried.
  • Echinacea root - the root of the purple coneflower of the North American prairie, with its drooping pink petals and spiny orange cone. The root has a characteristic tingling taste; the flowering herb of the same plant is a separate preparation.

Why a tincture

The two dried roots are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a bitter, earthy taste with the tingle typical of echinacea root, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving; ginseng is best taken earlier in the day. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.

Tincture or drops?

If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-root blend is available as Ginseng and Echinacea Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The roots and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Ginseng interacts with warfarin, diabetes medicines and MAO-inhibitor antidepressants; echinacea is unsuitable for autoimmune conditions. Please read before use.

  • Blood thinners: ginseng can reduce the effect of warfarin. Do not use this blend if you take warfarin unless your doctor agrees.
  • Diabetes: ginseng can lower blood sugar and add to the effect of diabetes medication. Monitor closely and consult your doctor.
  • Antidepressants: do not combine with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants.
  • Autoimmune conditions and immunosuppressants: echinacea is not for people with autoimmune conditions, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis or HIV, or for anyone taking immunosuppressant medicines, including after a transplant.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions: ginseng contains estrogen-like compounds. Do not use if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
  • Allergies: echinacea is a daisy-family (Asteraceae) plant. Avoid if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies.
  • Sleep, nerves and blood pressure: ginseng in high amounts can cause sleeplessness, nervousness or changes in blood pressure. Keep to the label serving, take it earlier in the day, and use caution if you have high blood pressure or a heart condition.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: do not use.
  • Age and duration: not for children. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks.
  • Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ginseng and Echinacea Tincture?
This is a two-herb liquid blend named for its ingredients: red ginseng root (Panax ginseng, the steamed and dried root of Asian ginseng) and Echinacea purpurea root (purple coneflower), extracted together in equal parts in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water. Ginseng is the slow-growing, forked root of a shade-loving plant of northeast Asia, cultivated for six years before harvest; echinacea is the purple coneflower of the North American prairie, used here as the root. Each is also sold on its own. It is a liquid herbal tincture, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - ginseng interacts with warfarin and diabetes medicines, and echinacea is unsuitable for autoimmune conditions.
What is the difference between the tincture and the alcohol-free drops?
Both contain the same two roots in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water - the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature and a bitter, earthy taste with the tingling note typical of echinacea root. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, milder and naturally sweet, for those who avoid alcohol. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
What is red ginseng? Is this echinacea root or herb?
Red ginseng is Panax ginseng root that has been steamed and then dried, which turns it reddish-brown and changes its ginsenoside profile; white ginseng is the same root simply dried. Both are Asian ginseng, a different species from American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and unrelated to Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus), which is not a true ginseng. The echinacea in this blend is the root of Echinacea purpurea; we also sell the flowering herb of the same plant and other echinacea species as single extracts. Red ginseng root and Echinacea purpurea root are each available on their own.
