Hedyotis (Hedyotis Diffusa) is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. The hedyotis is native to tropical and subtropical Asia and to islands of the northwest Pacific. Hedyotis was named by Linnaeus in 1753 in Species Plantarum. This generic name is derived from two Greek words, hedys, "sweet", and otos, "ear", in reference to the sweet-scented, ear-shaped leaves of some species.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Hedyotis Extract
What is Hedyotis (Hedyotis diffusa) extract?
Hedyotis diffusa, also written Oldenlandia diffusa and known in Chinese herbal tradition as Bai Hua She She Cao (which translates roughly as "white-flower snake-tongue grass"), is a slender, spreading annual of the madder family (Rubiaceae) with tiny white flowers; it is also called snake-needle grass or spreading hedyotis. The part used here is the dried aerial herb, sourced from Nepal. We offer the extract in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both taken by the drop. This is a whole-herb liquid extract. It is a different plant from Ban Zhi Lian (Scutellaria barbata), which we sell separately. We label the botanical name (Hedyotis diffusa, synonym Oldenlandia diffusa) and the plant part (herb) on every page.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Hedyotis diffusa herb; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Why are there several names - Hedyotis, Oldenlandia, Bai Hua She She Cao?
They all refer to the same plant. Hedyotis diffusa is the botanical name; Oldenlandia diffusa is a widely used synonym for the same species (and Scleromitrion diffusum is a more recently accepted name), while Bai Hua She She Cao is its name in Chinese herbal tradition and snake-needle grass or spreading hedyotis are English common names. So Hedyotis and Oldenlandia diffusa are not two different herbs - they are one and the same. It is, however, a different plant from Ban Zhi Lian (Scutellaria barbata), a separate herb we also carry. We print the botanical name and plant part on every page so the identity is clear.
How do I use Hedyotis liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Hedyotis extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Use hedyotis extract as suggested and do not exceed the suggested serving. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medication, consult your doctor before use. If you have any serious medical condition or are undergoing medical treatment, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using this product. Keep out of the reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dry place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Hedyotis (Hedyotis Diffusa) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
