Acacia (Senegalia senegal, formerly Acacia senegal) is a small thorny tree of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to the Sahel belt of Africa from Senegal to Sudan and east to the Arabian Peninsula and India. It rarely exceeds 6 meters, with grey bark, hooked spines in threes at the nodes, small bipinnate leaves, and creamy-white flower spikes. When the bark is cut in the dry season the tree exudes gum arabic, a pale amber gum that hardens into glassy tears and dissolves readily in water; it is a standard thickener in candy, soft drinks, and watercolor paint. We extract the dried gum.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
