Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa), the black chokeberry, is a deciduous shrub of the rose family, Rosaceae, native to wet woods, swamps, and bog edges of eastern North America from Newfoundland to Georgia and west to Minnesota. It grows 1 to 3 meters, suckering into thickets, with glossy dark green leaves that turn wine-red in autumn, flat clusters of small white flowers in late spring, and hanging bunches of pea-sized, violet-black berries in late summer. The fruit is so astringent and dry on the tongue that it chokes the mouth, hence the common name; Poland and the US Midwest grow it for juice and jam. We extract the dried berry.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
