About Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), sometimes called winter cherry or Indian ginseng, is a short, woody evergreen shrub of the nightshade family, Solanaceae, native to the drier parts of India, the Middle East, and North Africa, and grown as a field crop in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It grows 35 to 150 centimeters with branching stems covered in fine grey hairs, dull green oval leaves, and small greenish-yellow bell flowers in the leaf axils. The fruit is an orange-red berry enclosed in a papery, lantern-like husk. The long, tuberous, pale brown root smells distinctly of horse, which the Sanskrit name describes. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
