Bai Hua She She Cao (Scleromitrion diffusum, long known as Oldenlandia diffusa or Hedyotis diffusa) is a small annual of the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to southern and eastern China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, where it sprawls in damp fields, paddy margins, and roadside ditches. Its thin, wiry, four-angled stems trail 15 to 50 centimeters and carry pairs of narrow, grass-like leaves barely 2 millimeters wide. The Chinese name, snake-tongue grass with white flowers, describes the tiny solitary white four-petaled blooms that sit on short stalks in the leaf axils, followed by small round capsules. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
