Bai Jiang Cao (Thlaspi arvense), the field pennycress, is an annual of the mustard family, Brassicaceae, native to Europe and temperate Asia and now a common weed of fields and waste ground across North America. It grows 20 to 80 centimeters with an erect, often branched stem, stalkless, toothed, arrow-shaped leaves that clasp the stem, and small white four-petaled flowers in dense racemes from spring onward. Its most recognizable feature is the fruit: a flat, round, broadly winged pod 1 to 2 centimeters across, notched at the top, that looks like an old penny. The crushed plant smells strongly of garlic and mustard. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
