Bai Mao Gen (Imperata cylindrica), known in English as cogongrass, is a perennial grass of the grass family, Poaceae, native across East and Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and Australia, and now an aggressive invader of the southeastern United States. It forms dense stands 30 to 120 centimeters tall of stiff, narrow, sharp-edged leaves with a prominent white midrib, and in spring sends up fluffy, silky-white, cylindrical flower plumes 5 to 20 centimeters long that give the Chinese name, white thatch root. The creeping rhizomes are white, jointed, tough, and faintly sweet, and run for meters just below the soil. We extract the dried rhizome and root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
