Bai Zi Ren (Platycladus orientalis), the seed of the Chinese arborvitae or oriental thuja, comes from an evergreen conifer of the cypress family, Cupressaceae, native to northern and central China, Korea, and the Russian Far East, and planted around temples and gardens throughout East Asia and beyond. The tree grows 15 to 20 meters with reddish-brown fibrous bark and fan-like sprays of tiny scale leaves held in vertical planes, which distinguishes it from true Thuja. Its small bluish-green cones ripen brown with hooked, fleshy scales, each holding a wingless, oily, oval seed 5 to 7 millimeters long with a resinous, nutty taste. We extract the dried seed.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
