Frequently Asked Questions about Bai Zi Ren Extract
What is Bai Zi Ren (Platycladus orientalis) seed extract?
Bai Zi Ren is an evergreen conifer of the cypress family (Cupressaceae), botanically Platycladus orientalis, native to eastern Asia and widely planted across China and Korea. In English it is called oriental arborvitae or Chinese arborvitae; the seed is sold in the herb trade as biota seed, and in pharmacopoeial Latin it is Semen Platycladi. Regional names include Hakushinin in Japanese and Morpankhi in Hindi. The part used here is the seed kernel, taken from the small woody cones and dried. The kernel is naturally rich in fatty oil, and also contains proteins and small amounts of aromatic constituents - these are simply components of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, both from ethically sourced, wild harvested material. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product and not a pressed seed oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Platycladus orientalis seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as thuja or arborvitae, and is it the leaf?
This is the question worth reading carefully, because two different confusions are common here. First, the plant. Our herb is Platycladus orientalis. It was historically classified as Thuja orientalis and as Biota orientalis, and both of those old names are still in circulation - which is why it is often mistaken for Thuja occidentalis, the North American arborvitae. They are placed in different genera and they are not the same plant; Thuja occidentalis is a separate herb, sold separately under its own name. Second, the plant part. Our product is the seed kernel. The leaf is a different article entirely: the leaf of Thuja occidentalis is its own herb, and even the leaf of our own species, Platycladus orientalis, is a separate herb in Chinese practice known as Ce Bai Ye, which we do not offer here. So this is the seed of Platycladus orientalis - not thuja, and not leaf. One more note: the word arborvitae on its own usually refers to ornamental hedge conifers grown in gardens, which is a different subject altogether. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page precisely so these distinctions are not left to guesswork.
How do I use Bai Zi Ren liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Bai Zi Ren extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Bai Zi Ren is not right for everyone. The seed kernel is naturally rich in fatty oil, and taking more than the suggested serving may loosen the stools; in traditional practice this seed is customarily avoided by people who already have loose stools or ongoing digestive upset. Avoid this product during pregnancy and while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our Bai Zi Ren (Platycladus Orientalis) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
