Burr Reed (Sparganium emersum), the unbranched bur-reed, is an aquatic perennial of the cattail family, Typhaceae, formerly given its own family, native to ponds, slow rivers, and ditches across Europe, northern Asia, and North America. It grows 30 to 60 centimeters above the water, or trails in the current, with long, narrow, keeled strap-like leaves and a single zigzag flower stalk carrying separate round heads: small male heads above and larger green female heads below that ripen into spiky, burr-like balls. Spreading rhizomes anchor it in the mud. We extract the dried rhizome.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
