Burr Reed, or Sparganium Emersum, is a perennial, aquatic, flowering herb that belongs to the Typhaceae family. The floating stem may reach up to 2 m in length. The leaves can be withered and floating or hard and upright, showing over the water surface. They are flat, alternate, oblong, with a keeled base. The leaflets are linear. The plant is monoecious, but some plants produce both female and male inflorescences. The male inflorescence is represented by a ball of stamens; the female inflorescence is a ball of developing fruits which grow under the male globes. The stone fruits are light brown, glossy, elliptic. The rhizomes are creeping.*
