Butterfly Bush (Buddleja officinalis), known in China as Mi Meng Hua, is a deciduous shrub of the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, native to the hills of central and southern China, from Hubei and Sichuan to Yunnan and Guangdong, and to northern Vietnam and Myanmar. It grows 1 to 4 meters with arching branches and narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are grey-green above and densely white-felted beneath. In late winter and early spring it carries dense, drooping panicles of small lilac to pale pink flowers with an orange eye and a sweet honey scent that draws early butterflies. The dried buds are tiny, grey, and woolly. We extract the dried flower.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
