What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Buddleja officinalis flower; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as the butterfly bush in my garden?
No. The plant most people call "butterfly bush" is Buddleja davidii, an ornamental garden shrub grown to attract butterflies and considered invasive in some regions - it is not what this product is made from, and it is grown for the landscape rather than used as an internal herb. Our product is Buddleja officinalis, a different species whose dried flower is known in Chinese herbalism as Mi Meng Hua and has a long history of internal use in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine. Both are members of the genus Buddleja and are called "butterfly bush," which is why we label this page clearly by botanical name (Buddleja officinalis) and by its herbal name (Mi Meng Hua).
