Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is not a plant but a fungus of the Hymenochaetaceae family, found on living birch trees across the cold northern forests of Russia, Scandinavia, Canada, and the northern United States. What is harvested is not a mushroom with cap and stem but a sterile conk, a hard, irregular, black, deeply cracked mass that erupts through the bark and looks like burnt charcoal; inside it is rusty yellow-brown and corky. The conk grows slowly over 10 to 20 years, and the true fruiting body appears only after the host tree dies. Dried chaga has a mild, earthy, slightly vanilla-like taste. We extract the dried whole mushroom.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
