Chinese Yam (Dioscorea polystachya, also called cinnamon vine or Shan Yao) is a twining perennial vine of the yam family, Dioscoreaceae, native to China and grown as a root vegetable in Henan, Shandong, and Shanxi, as well as Japan and Korea; it has escaped and naturalized across the eastern United States. The slender stems twine to 3 to 5 meters, with glossy, heart- to arrow-shaped leaves, tiny cinnamon-scented flowers, and small potato-like aerial tubers in the leaf axils. Underground it forms a club-shaped tuber up to a meter long, brown and rough outside with crisp, white, sticky flesh that is mild and slightly sweet. We extract the dried root (tuber).
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
