Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong, listed in our catalog by the Latin trade name Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, and classified by Kew as a cultivated form of Conioselinum anthriscoides) is a perennial of the carrot family, Apiaceae, known only from cultivation on the Chengdu plain of Sichuan, where it has been grown for over a thousand years. It stands 40 to 60 centimeters with hollow, ribbed stems, fern-like leaves, and umbels of tiny white flowers in summer. The rhizome is an irregular, knotted, fist-shaped mass 2 to 7 centimeters across, yellow-brown outside, pale within, and intensely aromatic with a pungent, bitter, slightly numbing taste. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
