Frequently Asked Questions about Chuan Xiong Extract
What is Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) extract?
Chuan Xiong extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong, a perennial plant in the carrot family (Apiaceae). The same plant is also written as Ligusticum striatum or Ligusticum wallichii, and in English it is called Szechuan lovage or Chinese lovage. Our extract is made from the rhizome - the thickened underground stem - and is offered in two forms: a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material grown in Taiwan. This is a whole-rhizome liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by its botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is Ligusticum chuanxiong, distinct from the other plants in this family.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is Chuan Xiong the same as lovage, osha root, or ligustrazine?
No to all three. Our product is Ligusticum chuanxiong, known as Chuan Xiong and sold in English as Szechuan lovage or Chinese lovage. Despite the shared word, it is not true lovage: lovage is Levisticum officinale, a different genus and the familiar European culinary herb, which we sell separately as both root and leaf. It is also not osha root, which is Ligusticum porteri, a North American species in the same genus that we sell as its own product. And it is not ligustrazine, also called tetramethylpyrazine - that is a single compound isolated from the plant and used on its own, whereas our extract is made from the whole rhizome and carries its natural range of constituents. The same herb is sometimes listed as Ligusticum striatum, Ligusticum wallichii, or by the pharmacopoeia name Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong; these all refer to our plant. We label the product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Chuan Xiong liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The tincture and the alcohol-free glycerite are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Chuan Xiong extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
This herb should not be used during pregnancy. It may also affect blood clotting, so it is best to talk with a practitioner before use if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines, if you have a bleeding disorder, or if you are preparing for surgery, and those with heavy menstrual bleeding should be cautious. Because it belongs to the carrot family, anyone with a known allergy to celery, carrot, or parsley should be careful. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size, and excessive amounts may affect alertness, so use care when driving. Nursing mothers and anyone taking prescription medication or managing a health condition should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and it is wise to consult a practitioner trained in traditional Chinese herbs before combining it with other herbs. Keep out of reach of children. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods.
