Climbing Fern (Lygodium japonicum), the Japanese climbing fern or Hai Jin Sha, is a fern of the Lygodiaceae family, native to China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia, and now an invasive weed of pine woods across the southeastern United States. It is one of the few ferns that climbs: a single frond grows as a thin, wiry, twining rachis 3 to 6 meters long that winds through shrubs and up tree trunks, carrying pairs of lacy, triangular leaflets. Fertile leaflets are narrower and fringed with rows of spore cases that release a fine, pale yellow-brown, water-repellent powder, which is what is collected. We extract the dried spores.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
