Frequently Asked Questions about Climbing Fern Extract
What is Climbing Fern / Hai Jin Sha (Lygodium japonicum) spore extract?
Climbing Fern is a liquid extract of the dried spores of Lygodium japonicum, the Japanese climbing fern, a plant of the Lygodiaceae family. In traditional Chinese herbalism the spores are called Hai Jin Sha (in pharmacy, Spora Lygodii). This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a whole-spore liquid extract carrying the spores' natural constituents, taken by the drop. Please note this is Lygodium japonicum spore (Hai Jin Sha), a different fern from our Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris, the herb) and Woolly Fern (Cibotium barometz, the rhizome), which are separate species and plant parts. Because the climbing fern is an invasive plant that is sometimes sprayed to control it, sourcing and testing matter - please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Lygodium japonicum spores; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is this different from the other ferns you sell?
It helps to know, because "fern" covers very different plants. This product is Climbing Fern - Lygodium japonicum - and specifically its spores (Hai Jin Sha in Chinese herbalism). We also sell Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), where the part used is the herb/frond, and Woolly Fern (Cibotium barometz, known as Gou Ji), where the part is the rhizome. These are three different fern species, from three different families, with three different plant parts and traditional roles. We label each by botanical name so they are not confused. This one is the climbing fern spore.
How do I use Climbing Fern / Hai Jin Sha spore liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because it is alcohol free, this glycerite can be taken directly or added to a cool drink. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Climbing Fern right for everyone? Safety information.
Lygodium japonicum spores have a long traditional record and do not have well-known toxic effects at sensible amounts, but a few cautions apply. Sourcing matters: the climbing fern is an aggressive invasive plant in some regions and is sometimes treated with herbicides to control it, so choose material that is properly sourced and residue-tested - ours is identity- and residue-tested. Do NOT use during pregnancy or while nursing. Avoid it if you are sensitive or allergic to ferns or their spores. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. Store as directed on the label. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
