Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus), the guelder rose or European cranberry bush, is a deciduous shrub of the Viburnaceae family, formerly placed in Adoxaceae, native to damp woods, hedgerows, and streambanks across Europe, North Africa, and northern Asia, with a closely related American form in the northern United States and Canada. It grows 2 to 4 meters with grey-brown, slightly fissured bark and three-lobed, maple-like leaves that turn wine-red in autumn. In early summer it carries flat, lacecap clusters of tiny fertile flowers ringed by large, showy, sterile white ones, followed by drooping bunches of translucent, glossy scarlet berries that hang on into winter. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
