Cramp Bark (Viburnum Opulus), also known as Guelder rose, Black Haw, Cranberry Tree, is a large deciduous shrub growing as much as 15 feet (5 m) tall and 15 feet wide. It is native to the moist lowland forests of England and Scotland and naturalized to moist forests of the northern United States and southern Canada. The bark is stripped before the leaves change color in the fall, or before the buds open in the spring. A member of the honeysuckle family, cramp bark bears large white flowers, up to 5 inches (12 cm) across that yield red berries in the fall. The berries are eaten like cranberries, although moderation is recommended.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Cramp Bark Extract
What is cramp bark extract used for?
Cramp bark extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried bark of Viburnum opulus, a large deciduous shrub commonly known as cramp bark or guelder rose. HawaiiPharm offers it as a modern concentrated liquid herbal extract to support general wellness. The tincture format uses grain alcohol as the solvent, the traditional herbal extraction method. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between cramp bark drops and cramp bark tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers cramp bark in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who avoid alcohol. The cramp bark tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional herbal extraction method. Both are made from the same dried Viburnum opulus bark - the choice comes down to personal preference or dietary needs.
What is cramp bark, and is it related to cranberry?
Cramp bark is a common name for Viburnum opulus, a large deciduous shrub of the Adoxaceae family native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North America. It is also known as guelder rose and is grown as an ornamental garden plant, bearing white flower clusters and bright red berries. Although one of its folk names is "highbush cranberry" - a reference to those red berries - it is not related to the true cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), which is a different plant in a different family. HawaiiPharm's product is a liquid herbal extract made from the dried bark.
How do I use cramp bark liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store the tincture in a cool, dark place.
Are there any precautions when taking cramp bark supplement?
Cramp bark extract is made from the bark of Viburnum opulus. Note that the raw berries of this plant can cause stomach upset if eaten in quantity, though this product is a bark extract rather than a berry product. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription medications, consult your healthcare provider before use. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Cramp Bark (Viburnum Opulus) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
